The Intel® Enpirion® ES1010SI is a full-featured hot-swap power controller that targets +12V applications. Features include soft start, programmable overcurrent detection, current regulation with time delay to latch-off, all with minimal external components.
Designers can increase the long-term reliability of their FPGA-based systems by enabling the safe insertion and removal of boards by limiting dangerous in-rush currents from a live backplane. When boards are inserted into a "live" system backplane, the hot-swap controller detects the power supply and provides a carefully controlled power ramp up. Designers of telecommunications, enterprise, storage systems, and industrial and embedded computing equipment can upgrade or replace system boards without having to power down the entire system.
During initial power-up, the IC can either isolate the voltage supply from the load by holding the external N-Channel MOSFET switch off or apply the supply rail directly to the load for true hot-swap capability. The Enable pin must be pulled low for the device to isolate the power supply from the load. With the Enable pin held high or floating, the ES1010SI will be in true hot-swap mode.
