5G Using Edge Computing Offers Opportunities

5G is expected to bring unprecedented low latency and high bandwidth to the mobile network. Edge computing, when combined with 5G, provides numerous opportunities in media, retail, banking, security, and manufacturing industries. Using general purpose servers based on Intel® processors, AT&T plans to virtualize three-quarters of its network, replacing fixed-function network appliances with virtualized network functions. By virtualizing its network, AT&T has the freedom to scale its network resources in line with demand. Mobile applications, such as augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR), experience less latency when edge computing is used in combination with 5G, enhancing a user’s experience. Learn more about how Intel and AT&T are collaborating to increase the responsiveness of applications and to prepare for tomorrow’s 5G network.
